GMAT exercise 14

●Question 1. Sentence Correction
Direction: Correct the underlined part

Joachim Raff and Giacomo Meyerbeer are examples of the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim while living, often goes into decline after death, and never regains popularity again.

A. often goes into decline after death, and never regains popularity again
B. whose reputation declines after death and never regains its status again
C. but whose reputation declines after death and never regains its former status
D. who declines in reputation after death and who never regained popularity again
E. then has declined in reputation after death and never regained popularity

●Question 2. Critical Reasoning

Many people suffer an allergic reaction to certain sulfites, including those that are commonly added to wine as preservatives. However, since there are several wine makers who add sulfites to none of the wines they produce, people who would like to drink wine but are allergic to sulfites can drink wines produced by these wine makers without risking an allergic reaction to sulfites.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A. These wine makers have been able to duplicate the preservative effect produced by adding sulfites by means that do not involve adding any potentially allergenic substances to their wine.
B. Not all forms of sulfite are equally likely to produce the allergic reactions.
C. Wine is the only beverage to which sulfites are commonly added.
D. Apart from sulfites, there are no substances commonly present in wine that give rise to an allergic reaction.
E. Sulfites are not naturally present in the wines produced by these wine makers in amounts large enough to produce an allergic reaction in someone who drinks these wines.

●Question 3. Data Sufficiency
Directions: In this problem, a question is followed by two statements containing certain data. You are to determine whether the data provided by the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Choose the correct answer based upon the statement’s data and your knowledge of mathematics.

What is the average of eleven consecutive integers?
1) the average of the first nine integers is 7
2) the average of the last nine integers is 9

A. statement 1 alone is sufficient, but statement 2 alone is not sufficient to answer the question
B. statement 2 alone is sufficient, but statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer the question
C. both statements taken together are sufficient to answer the question, but neither statement alone is sufficient
D. each statement alone is sufficient
E. statements 1 and 2 together are not sufficient, and additional data is needed to answer the question

●Question 4. Problem Solving
If d is the standard deviation of x,y and z, what is the standard deviation of x+5, y+5 and z+5?
A. d B. d+5 C. 2d D. 3d E. 4d

●Answer to Q1: C
In A, B, and D, the expression ‘again’ is making redundancy with ‘regains’ and ‘regained’. In addition, B must have a conjunction such as ‘but’ to modify the antecedent ‘composer’. And the verbs in E should be changed into the verbs of present tense because ‘receives’ out of the line shows the present tense. In general, the tense depends on the sequence of the actions or situations mentioned in a given sentence. So, the answer is C.

●Answer to Q2: E
The author argues that since some wine makers are not adding sulfites in making wines, people who are allergic to sulfites can drink wines produced by these wine makers without worrying about their allergic reaction. The author is saying that wines produced by these wine makers are sulfite free. In other words, the author is making an assumption that the only way wines can contain sulfites is for wine makers to add sulfites. Thus, the correct answer is (E), which says that sulfites are not naturally present in the wines produced by these wine makers.

●Answer to Q3: D
The number of the variables of the cosecutive integers is 1, the answer can be D, 1)=2) the average of eleven consecutive integers is 8, therefore the best answer is D.

●Answer to Q3: A
If the all elements a set are moving by the same value, the standard deviation of the new set is the same value of that of the old set, so x+5, y+5, z+5 has also the same standard deviation d, therefore the best answer is A.
