GMAT exercise ― 10

●Question 1. Sentence Correction
Direction: Correct the underlined part

From the earliest days of the tribe, kinship determined the way in which the Ojibwa society organized its labor, provided access to its resources, and defined rights and obligations involved in the distribution and consumption of those resources.

A. and defined rights and obligations involved in the distribution and consumption of those resources
B. defining rights and obligations involved in their distribution and consumption
C. and defined rights and obligations as they were involved in its distribution and consumption
D. whose rights and obligations were defined in their distribution and consumption
E. the distribution and consumption of them defined by rights and obligations

●Question 2. Critical Reasoning

Unless lion hunting decreases, lions will soon be extinct in the wild. The countries in which the lions’ habitats are located are currently debating joint legislation that would ban lion hunting. Thus, if these countries can successfully enforce this legislation, the survival of lions in the wild will be ensured.

The reasoning in the argument is most vulnerable to criticism on the grounds that the argument

A. assumes without sufficient warrant that a ban on lion hunting could be successfully enforced
B. considers the effects of hunting on lions without also considering the effects of hunting on other endangered animal species
C. fails to take into account how often lion hunters are unsuccessful in their attempts to kill lions
D. neglects to consider the results of governmental attempts in the past to limit lion hunting
E. takes the removal of an impediment to the lions’ survival as a guarantee of their survival

●Question 3. Data Sufficiency
Directions: In this problem, a question is followed by two statements containing certain data. You are to determine whether the data provided by the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Choose the correct answer based upon the statement’s data and your knowledge of mathematics.

2^x/2^y=?

Condition 1) x=y-2
Condition 2) y=3

A. statement 1 alone is sufficient, but statement 2 alone is not sufficient to answer the question
B. statement 2 alone is sufficient, but statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer the question
C. both statements taken together are sufficient to answer the question, but neither statement alone is sufficient
D. each statement alone is sufficient
E. statements 1 and 2 together are not sufficient, and additional data is needed to answer the question

●Question 4. Problem Solving
If x,y are integers, and x+y+xy=0 (y is non-zero), then what is the value of y?

A. -2 B. -1 C. 1 D. 2 E. 3

———————————————————————

●Answer to Q1: A
Because there are two preceding verbs ‘organized’ and ‘provided’, which are connected with just a comma, out of the underline, the answer choices B, D, and E without ‘conjunction & additional verb’ are all wrong. And even though the answer choice C is starting with ‘and defined’, the meaning of the subordinate conjunction ‘as’ in the subsequent expression is somewhat imprecise. Furthermore, there is no specific object of ‘distribution and consumption’ in C while ‘the distribution and consumption’ in A has a modifier ‘of those resources’, which makes the meaning of A clearer. Therefore, the answer is A.

●Answer to Q2: E
The argument lions are endangered due to hunting and banning lion hunting will ensure survival of the specie is subject to two assumptions. One is that lions are endangered because of hunting. If decrease in lion population is caused by other factors, such as change in habitat or decrease in availability of prey than the argument no longer holds. Another assumption is that banning lion hunting can effectively lead to survival of the specie. There can be other factors that threatens its survival, thus removing one factor does not naturally lead to survival. Therefore, the correct answer is E.

●Answer to Q3: A
2^x/2^y=2^(x-y). Condition 1) x-y=-2, sufficient, therefore the best answer is A.

●Answer to Q4: A
x+y+xy+1=1, (x+1)(y+1)=1, x=y=0 or x=y=-2. Because y is non-zero, y=-2,. Therefore the best answer is A
