The post, established in 1999 to help solve a wide range of difficulties facing foreign businesses operating in Korea, had remained vacant since August last year when former ombudsman Ahn Choong-yong left to become the chairman of the National Commission for Corporate Partnership.
Kim will serve as the ombudsman for three years through April 2018, KOTRA said Wednesday.
"I will do my best to improve Korea's business environment for foreign companies and to help them deal with an array of difficulties in Korea," Kim said.
He received a bachelor's degree in economics from Sungkyunkwan University and a Ph.D. in international economics from the University of Chicago.
Kim has been serving various roles at home and abroad over the years.
Among them, he was a chief researcher at the Korea Development Institute, a policy advisor to the trade ministry, a professor at Sungkyunkwan University, a non-standing board of director at Korea National Oil Corp. and president of Korean International Economic Association.
