Kwon Tae-shin, former chief of staff of the Prime Minister's Office, was appointed the new head of the Korea Economic Research Institute (KERI), Friday.
Kwon, 65, is the first bureaucrat to head the institute, an official at KERI said.
He served in the Prime Minister's Office from January 2009 to August 2010, and vice chairman of the Presidential Council on National Competitiveness until last year.
He also served as vice minister of the Ministry of Finance and Economy in 2005.
Kwon graduated from Kyeongbuk High School and studied economics at Seoul National University. He received a master's in economics at SNU and Vanderbilt University, as well as a master's in management at City University.
KERI, founded in 1981, is a public economic research institute under the umbrella of The Federation of Korean Industries.
