e-mart and Lotte Mart are rushing to open new discount stores despite toughening government regulations for large retailers.
Shinsegae's retail affiliate e-mart plans to open six new stores across the country this year, including two outlets of the warehouse-type supermarket Traders.
"The plan is subject to change depending on the business circumstances," an e-mart official said.
The firm has already decided to open one store in Sejong City this year.
e-mart is operating 148 outlets, and seven Traders stores, according to the firm. The firm opened two stores last year.
Lotte Group's affiliate Lotte Mart is also considering opening two or three stores this year, an official said.
"No concrete plan has been made due to the government regulations, but there will be no change in our plan to spur growth," the official at Lotte Mart said.
The Lotte retail unit operates 108 stores in Korea.
Homeplus, British retail giant Tesco's Korean unit, declined to comment on any details of expansion.
The Korean unit has been running 139 outlets since 1999.
