Hyundai Motor said Wednesday that the Chinese government has selected its flagship Sonata sedan for use in two major political events this year ― the National People’s Congress and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

This is the second year for Korea’s largest automaker to be chosen.

“During the events, high-ranking officials will use the Sonata, which will help improve our brand image and have a positive impact on our presence in China,” an official from Hyundai Motor said. “It also shows our cars are appreciated in China in terms of quality.”

The automaker’s biggest manufacturing base abroad is China, which has a capacity of 1.44 million vehicles a year, with plants in Russia capable of producing 200,000, in Brazil 150,000 and Turkey 100,000.

Group Chairman Chung Mong-koo has stressed that the automaker should focus on quality improvement as well as on growth to strengthen its foothold in the Chinese market.
