Samsung Electronics Co., the world's leading smartphone maker, said Tuesday local sales of its flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone have surpassed 3 million units in the three months since its debut.

The record is one month faster than the sales of the Galaxy S2 and nine months faster than the Galaxy S phones, Samsung said in a press release, referring to the earlier models in the Galaxy S line-up that have together sold more than 50 million units around the world since June 2010.

The Galaxy S3 smartphones have maintained robust sales worldwide as well, as the company said earlier this month its global sales topped the 20 million mark since its release in late May.

Samsung officials said the company plans to keep up its brisk pace of sales in the country by launching 100,000 units of a limited edition model of the Galaxy S3, called "Martian Pink," which is named after a rare pink diamond.

"The Galaxy S3 Martian Pink will gain popularity among women and young people with its sophisticated style," a Samsung official said.

Shin Jong-kyun, Samsung's president for mobile business, had earlier predicted sales of its latest smartphone model would reach 30 million units globally within the year.

In the second quarter of this year, the South Korean tech behemoth maintained its place as the world's top smartphone manufacturer with more than 32 percent share of the US$219 billion global smartphone market, according to market researcher Strategy Analytics. (Yonhap)
