Hur Dong-soo, chairman of the country’s second largest refiner GS Caltex, stressed the importance of initiating new projects to stay competitive in the global market.

In a celebration Friday honoring the company’s 45th year attended by company officials and officials from partner companies at GS Tower in Yeoksam-dong, Seoul, Hur congratulated the performances of GS Caltex in recent years that helped it become a global firm.

“GS Caltex exported 30.2 trillion won worth of oil last year, 83.3 percent of total imports,” he said. “We have won the 20 billion won Export Tower Award, the second domestic company to do so, and have risen to become the representative export corporation of Korea.

“Let us become the global energy company by enforcing our world-class competitiveness in the future.”

The chairman also expressed the importance of close corporation with newly formed sister group GS Energy to reinforce the energy businesses it already has. He also wants to initiate projects in recycling and creating new energy to differentiate GS Caltex from competitors. According to Hur, considering the volatile domestic and foreign business environs, GS must aggressively pursue new projects to survive.

He also said that a corporation with social responsibility is another aspect that makes a company truly global, citing the Yeosu Expo. GS Caltex was among the corporations that helped the bid for the international event, which promotes global consciousness of worldwide pollution and social responsibility.

GS Caltex is Korea’s first private oil company and was founded in 1967.
