GS EandC wins deal to clean up oil contaminated soil in Kuwait

Listen

Korean builder GS Engineering & Construction Corp. said Tuesday that it has won a $67 million deal to clean up oil contaminated soil in southern Kuwait.

The deal signed with state-run Kuwait Oil Co. calls for the remediation of 290,000 square meters of land in the Middle East country.

The area was contaminated during the 1991 Gulf War when hundreds of wells were destroyed, causing an estimated 7 million barrels of crude to seep into the ground.

"Remediation work will start in February and be completed in 36 months," the builder said.

It added that contract marks the first time that a Korean construction company has won a soil clean-up deal in the region and could open more related business opportunities in the future.

Kuwait plans to spend around $4 billion in the coming years to clean up oil spills in the country. (Yonhap)
