Korean TV makers' sales in the U.S. sharply rose in the fourth quarter of last year on the back of sustained sales growth of premium TVs, data showed Sunday.

Combined market shares of Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. in the U.S. came in at 73 percent in the final quarter of 2011, up from 56 percent in the first quarter of last year, according to Group Inc., a market research firm.

In the cited period, their Japanese rivals including Sony Corp. fell to 25 percent from 43 percent in the first quarter of 2011, data showed.

In terms of 3D TVs, the Korean TV makers claimed slices totaling 66 percent of the U.S. market in the fourth quarter, up 10 percentage points from three quarters earlier, showing their leadership in the premium TV market.

Havis Kwon, president and chief executive of LG Electronics, earlier said that his company is seeking to raise the global market share of its 3D TVs to more than 25 percent this year, which will lead it to secure the top spot in the global market. (Yonhap)
