Authorities attempt to suppress social media, mobile apps

The Lee Myung-bak government apparently has not given up the hope of imposing rules on Internet users, despite none of its previous attempts managing to stick. Newly targeted by censorship authorities are the loudmouth talk-show hosts on Internet radio, who have been converting millions of mobile users into listeners with their unsafe humor and controversial political views.

After a general meeting on Thursday, the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KOCSC) decided to launch a ``new media’’ review panel to monitor content on social networking services Twitter (www.twitter.com) and Facebook (www.facebook.com) and smarpthone applications (apps) such as commercial radio ``podcasts.’’
