LG Electronics is manufacturing low-priced light-emitting diode (LED) light bulbs to be sold commercially. Efforts to expand its market will include discount outlets among sales channels.

The electronics company said it is launching four models, including a 7.5 watt light bulb priced at 13,900 won, the lowest in the local LED market.

LED light bulbs for home use began being sold at “LG Best Shop,” its retail chain, early this year. Now retail outlets such as E-mart will also carry the lamps.

Despite merits such as durability, high efficiency and are more environmentally friendly, LED products are neglected in the mass market as they are expensive.

They are however a good investment as LG’s LEDs cut energy use by over 80 percent compared with other light bulbs. They are free of mercury or lead. The light bulbs are also certified for high luminance efficiency, and can be used for up to 17 years for eight hours of use each day.

“We could differentiate the product cost thanks to our technology and cooperation with affiliates,” an executive for LG’s lighting business division said. “We will extend the distribution channel to supply consumers with LED products at lower prices,” he added.

LG Twin Tower, headquarters of LG Group which has been going through remodeling, has diverse LED products installed to save energy and help enhance effectiveness at work.
