For Merck, the global giant in the chemical and pharmaceutical businesses, a one-off green initiative may not be enough. For the outfit, the buzzword has to come at least three times as its ``green cubed’’ strategy indicates.

Merck Korea, the company’s subsidiary in Seoul, disclosed its ``green cubed’’ strategy this week involving eco-friendly materials, processes and devices at the International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) 2010.

``We highlight our innovative products for all display segments, focusing on new technologies for three-dimensional (3D) displays during IMID,’’ Merck Korea CEO Juergen Koenig said.

``All Merck products are eco-friendly materials, enabling eco-friendly manufacturing processes and reducing the energy consumption of the devices,’’ he said, referring to the green cubed approach.

IMID is an annual event attracting top-tier display companies and scholars from across the world. It kicked off on Oct. 12 and continues through Oct. 15 at KINTEX in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province.

Koenig, who received an honorary award during the gathering along with LG Electronics chief technology officer Paik Woo-hyun, said that IMID helps enhance the capacity of display companies here, including Merck itself.

``For Merck, IMID is of particular importance because it shows the latest progress made by engineers and researchers working with liquid crystals and other display technologies, including new display components and materials,’’ Koenig said.

``Also it is a good opportunity to inform participants along with customers about recent developments in the display business as well as new display modes and trends.’’

On the side line of IMID 2010, a total of five research teams were given awards ― Three teams garnered the 2010 Merck Award and two received the Merck Young Scientists Award.

Merck entered Korea back in 1989 and has played a pivotal role in the nation’s success in the display industry via developing advanced materials and providing top-of-the-line components based on its cutting-edge technology.

Its edge comes from the company’s Advanced Technology Center, which was established in 2002. Merck spent 11 million euros over the past few years to set up its second center, which opened midway through 2010.
