POSCO, the country’s foremost steelmaker, is expanding its business horizon by joining the business of generating electricity from waste, dubbed refuse-derived fuel (RDF).

The Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province-based company said Thursday that it will join hands with Busan City, the country’s largest port city, in order to construct the dedicated facilities for the scheme by 2013.

Out of around 900 tons of daily waste produced by Busan residents on average, the facilities would come up with 500 tons of RDF to generate 25,000 kilowatt of power, which can meet the electricity demands of 40,000 households.

This marks the country’s first attempt of creating power from RDF, which refers to a fuel produced by shredding and dehydrating municipal solid waste including such materials as plastics.
