Kim Yu-na Picked as Person of the Year

Figure Skating Queen Kim Yu-na
By Kim Tong-hyung
Staff Reporter

If there's anyone out there still in doubt about Kim Yu-na being the country's most transcendent personality, the results of a recent online poll should quiet the debate.

The teenage figure staking starlet and television commercial queen edged two dead presidents, the incumbent president, the head of the United Nations (U.N.) and a budding Major League Baseball (MLB) star to be named as ``Person of the Year'' by the online readers of Job Korea (www.jobkorea.co.kr).

The Web site, a popular destination for job listings and business information, said its list was based on a survey of about 1,400 adults in their 20s and 30s.

The 19-year-old Kim, currently the world's No. 1 in the International Skating Union (ISU) and fresh off her win at the Grand Prix Final in Japan last week, earned a mind-boggling 64.7 percent of the votes, Job Korea said.

Late President Roh Moo-hyun, who died in May after tragically committing suicide, finished second with 5.8 percent of the votes, while current President Lee Myung-bak was third with 3.7 percent.

Pop singer and movie star Rain finished fourth with 2.5 percent of the votes, followed by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon who got a 2.1 percent support.

Choo Shin-soo, a Cleveland Indians outfielder coming off a breakout season in Major League Baseball, got 2 percent of the votes, followed by Ahn Chul-soo, the founder of security software maker, AhnLab, who got 1.9 percent of the votes. Former president and Noble Peace Prize winner Kim Dae-jung, who died just three months after attending Roh's funeral, garnered 1.4 percent of the votes.

In a separate poll for celebrities, Lee Byung-hun, who made his Hollywood debut in ``G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra,'' but has been ducking the media lately after being linked to a scandal involving a former girlfriend, was voted as the most memorable actor of 2009. Ko Hyun-jung, who is enjoying a renaissance in television after coming back from semi-retirement following her divorce from Shinsegae Vice Chairman Chung Yong-jin, was named as the top actress of the year.

Pop groups 2PM and Girls' Generation were named as the top music talents of the year, Job Korea said.
