A Korean economic guru, who was once arrested on charges of spreading false rumors but was acquitted later, opened a blog using services offered by Google.
Park Dae-sung, better known by his pen name ``Minerva,'' opened a blog this week at www.ml.or.kr based on the Textcube platform, run by Google Korea. Ml stands for ``Minerva lounge.''
Park has yet to upload any writing to the blog but the 31-year-old said he plans to post many economic analyses starting this month.
``Thus far, people have depended on information presented by the government or brokerage analysts in managing assets. But both have their own incentives, which may not be in tune with those of ordinary people,'' Park said.
``In this climate, I want to contribute objective analyses of what is going on in the economy through my blog. I hope that I will be able to help ordinary people,'' he said.
Park said that his blog will embrace foreign visitors by offering services in English and Chinese.
``The foreign language services will enable overseas Internet users to have access to my blog and to share my ideas. On top of new write-ups, I look to translate old ones,'' he said.
The self-taught Internet pundit said he had already asked professional translators to work on his posts.
Park gained a prominence midway through last year by predicting the sharp depreciation of the Korean won as well as the collapse of Lehman Brothers.
Park did not study economics in university, but learned about the difficult subject on his own through reading books and Web sites.
He was arrested early this year on charges of circulating rumors that the government forced local banks to stop buying dollars last December to prevent a steep depreciation of the Korean currency.
Some top bureaucrats such as then-Strategy and Finance Minister Kang Man-soo argued that Park's claim prompted a dollar-buying spree, which he contended caused multi-billion losses to the country.
However, a court eventually vindicated Park in April, though the prosecution appealed the decision.
After Park was apprehended in January, he stopped writing but he now contributes to a local daily.
Plus, his article ― an analysis of the economic affairs ― will be printed in a monthly in a couple of weeks. His book will also be released in the near future.
