LG Electronics plunged to fifth in the global PC monitor market in the second quarter, while Samsung Electronics maintained the top position for the eighth straight quarter.
According to market research firm IDC, the market share by LG Electronics in terms of in cathode ray-tube (CRT) and liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors for conventional devices was 9.8 percent in the April-June period from 11 percent a quarter earlier.
"LG was passive in selling 17-inch LCDs, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, while it virtually failed to increase its share even in the non-bundled 19-inch market," an LG source told The Korea Times, Monday.
Regarding the result, the LG spokesman said his company was checking out the survey without elaborating further.
Samsung captured 16.5 percent of all monitors sold in the second quarter of the year. U.S.-based PC maker Dell came second with a 15 percent share, followed by Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Acer with shares of 10.5 percent and 10.2 percent, respectively, according to the research firm.
In the LCD monitor market alone, Samsung kept its lead for the fourth-straight quarter, taking up a 16 percent share, followed by Dell and HP, with 15.7 percent and 10.8 percent, respectively. LG was ranked fourth only in that category.
Research facilities and industry watchers have said 17-inch LCD monitors still constituted the bulk of LCD monitor shipments in the Asian emerging markets, although countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, China and even South Korea began to see 19-inch monitors outselling 17-inch models in the remainder of the year.
"LG needs to spend more on promotion for its notebooks from North America, Europe to the Asia-Pacific rim to prevent its market share from further falling," said the source.
According to another market research firm, WitsView, the average price of a 19-inch monitor panel fell to $95 as of Sept. 19 from $130 just two months ago, while the price of 17-inch also slumped to $78 from $108 during the same period.
"Panel prices will fall at a faster pace once the seasonally strong third and fourth quarters pass. And, new capacity coming on line next year poses another big concern for PC monitor manufacturers," said a Samsung official.
