Hyundai Mobis, an affiliate of Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group and the country’s largest auto parts supplier, has succeeded in localizing core parts of the motor-driven power steering (MDPS) system, according to the firm Monday.

Hyundai Mobis said that it has localized the electronic control unit (ECU) and the optical sensor, core parts of the MDPS system that have so far been imported from other countries with advanced technologies.

MDPS is a next-generation steering device, which uses an electric motor, that not only improves fuel efficiency drastically but also contributes to a safe drive as it helps drivers operate the steering wheel in different driving conditions.

The ECU and the optical sensor are core parts of the high-tech MDPS system installed into the steering shaft to adjust the steering angle in accordance with the driving speed of the vehicle and control the movement of the motor.

Hyundai Mobis expects that the localization of the ECU and the optical sensor will save an annual 60 billion won ($65.3 million) through import substitution.
