Climber Oh Takes Historic Expedition to Annapurna

On her way to Annapurna, Oh Eun-sun will carry in her inside pocket a photograph of Ko Mi-young, Oh's life-long rival, who fell to her death on Mt. Nanga Parbat, the world's ninth-highest peak in the Himalayas.
It is obvious that Oh's latest expedition is for her to become first woman to climb all 14 Himalayan peaks over 8,000 meters, but it is also about remembering her competitor in that global race.
Together with her climbing squad, Oh was taking a rest Sunday ahead of their departure for Nepal for the historic expedition today.
During the Friday announcement of her departure, Oh stood before 200 supporters in an auditorium in southwestern Seoul, telling them that she was sure about her success this time.
Wearing black pants and an orange-colored jacket, her hair tied in a ponytail, she was smiling brightly but appeared nervous.
``My first attempt last autumn was unsuccessful because of adverse weather. But this time will be different,'' Oh told the guests. ``I will be back safely after scaling the summit with the mind-set that obeys the rules of Mother Nature.''
Oh is scheduled to leave for Nepal on Korean Air. After intensive on-site acclimatization, she plans to conquer the 8,091-meter peak without an external oxygen supply by early April.
Her trip may be extended to the end of May, mostly depending on the weather.
``I'm thrilled,'' she said. ``This is quite the same feeling as I had when I ascended a mountain for the first time many years ago.''
Choi Hong-geun, former head of the Korean Alpine Club, called Oh an iconic ``athlete'' who represents Korean mountaineers.
``If she succeeds, her achievement will have the same value as that of gold medalist Kim Yu-na in the women's figure skating at the Vancouver Olympics,'' said the climber.
The 44-year-old woman's venture to make new history in female mountain climbing was once sandwiched between a rock and a hard place as some of her peers raised doubt over her claim that she reached the top of the 8,586-meter Kangchenjunga last May.
Citing the blurry background of a photo of her allegedly taken at the top and the notably shorter time she took on the expedition, they alleged Oh, either by intention or not, did not reach the top.
But they dropped their suspicions following an explanation from Oh and the testimony of those who accompanied her in the mission.
``It was sort of a bitter rite of passage to become the world's champion,'' said Lee In-jung, president of the Korean Alpine Federation. ``Now, we are all on the same page that wishes her successful climbing and a safe return.''
Oh is now leading the race for the championship in a razor-thin competition with Gerlinde Kaltenbrunne, 39, of Austria and Edurne Pasaban, 36, of Spain.
The Spanish climber left early this month on a trip to conquer both Shisha Pangma and Annapurna this spring, the last two peaks in her record-breaking bid.
Pasaban was quoted as saying that she and Oh will meet up at base camp and they will both climb Annapurna along the North Buttress Route.
오은선 안나푸르나로 14좌 마침표
여성 산악인 오은선 (44)씨가 8,000m급 히말라야 14좌 완등을 위해 짐을 꾸렸다. 오은선씨는 5일 오후 서울 금천구 가산동 블랙야크 본사에서 '2010 오은선 안나푸르나 원정대' 발대식을 갖고 안나푸르나 (8,091m) 등정을 향한 장도에 나섰다.
원정대 등반대장을 맡은 오은선씨는 전 세계 8,000m 급 봉우리 14좌 가운데 13좌를 올랐으며, 안나푸르나 등정에 성공하면 여성 산악인으로는 세계 최초로 14좌 완등 기록을 세우게 된다.
오 대장은 이날"8,000m급 등정을 마무리하는 중요한 산행"이라며 "'세계 최초'라는 중압감을 털고, 고산에서 만년설을 처음 보았을 때의 그 설렘을 간직한 채 담담하게 오르고 싶다"고 말했다.
오 대장은 8일 네팔로 건너가 타르푸출리 (5,663m) 등에서 고소 적응 훈련을 한 뒤, 캠프 설치 등을 거쳐 4월 23~29일께 정상 공격에 나선다. 오 대장은 북면 버트레스 루트를 통해 무산소로 오를 계획인데, 1차 공격에서 실패할 경우 5월 중순까지 추가 등정을 시도할 계획이다.
오 대장은 지난해 10월에도 안나푸르나에 도전했으나 기상 악화 등으로 고전하다가 "최고의 등반은 살아서 돌아오는 것"이라며 발길을 돌렸다.
경쟁자 가운데 오스트리아의 겔린더 칼덴브루너 (40)와 이탈리아의 니베스 메로이 (49)는 다소 주춤한 상태. 다만 12개봉을 오른 스페인의 에드루네 파사반 (37)은 오 대장과 마찬가지로 8일 출국, 시샤팡마 (8,027m)에 오른 뒤 4월말 안나푸르나에 도전할 계획이다.
오 대장은 이날 목숨까지 걸어야 하는 고산 도전이 부담스럽지 않느냐는 질문에 "산은 내게 운명 같은 존재"라며 "늘 산이 그리운 것을 보면 나와 산을 잇는 보이지 않는 끈이 있는 것 같다"고 말했다.
오 대장은 또 선의의 경쟁자이자 동료였던 고미영씨의 추락사와 관련, "그가 있었기 때문에 더욱 분발하게 됐다"며 이번 등정에 그의 사진을 가져갈 것이라고 말했다. 정상 등정에 성공할 경우, 고미영씨의 사진을 꺼내 가슴에 안고 14좌 완등 기념 촬영을 할 계획이다. 칸쳉중가 (8,563m) 등정 진위와 관련해서는 "지금은 안나푸르나만 생각하고 있다"고 담담하게 대답했다.
