Only around Christmas can Seoulites see Korea's esteemed Maestro Chung Myung-whun wield the baton while dressed like Santa Claus. The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra will wrap up the year with special seasonal shows that will be broadcast live in downtown Seoul Thursday and Friday.
In 2007, the New York Metropolitan Opera created hype by broadcasting an opera in real time through a screen on Times Square. Likewise Seoulites will be able to enjoy live performances by the city's top orchestra in the Gwanghwamun Plaza area, Jongno, over the course of the next few weeks.
As part of Seoul City's ``Symphony of Light'' festival, which will take place between 7 and 10 p.m. each evening through Sunday, Maestro Chung will lead the ensemble as they perform seasonal classics. The concert, featuring Christmas carols, will be displayed on the wall and central staircase of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts as well as on the surface of the KT Building across the street, on Thursday and Friday.
On Dec. 29, the orchestra will give a year-end concert at the Sejong Center. Though the event is by invitation only, everyone is invited to watch the projected live video outside. The program features Mozart's "Concerto for Flute and Harp in C major, K. 299," with flutist Park Ji-eun and harpist Kwak Jung, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 ``Chorale,'' with the National Chorus of Korea, Seoul Metropolitan Chorus and Seoul Motet Choir.
The ``Chorale'' Symphony will be restaged the following evening at Seoul Arts Center for the eighth and last of the orchestra's Masterpiece Series. Soprano Lee Myung-joo, mezzo-soprano Kim Sun-jeong, tenor Charles Kim and bass Lim Chae-jun will appear as soloists for the grand oeuvre. Tickets cost 10,000 to 70,000 won.
On Jan. 6, 2010, the orchestra's New Year's Concert at the Sejong Center will be projected in Gwanghwamun. The program features Tchaikovsky's "Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35" with rising violinist Shin Hyun-su, Debussy's ``La Mer'' and Ravel's ``La Valse.'' Tickets cost 10,000 to 50,000 won.
