Music may be a dream for some, but for jazz artist Nah Youn-sun, it was mere coincidence.
``To be honest, I can't complain if music just leaves me, since it came to me by chance in the first place,'' the 40-year-old singer said during an interview with The Korea Times, Tuesday, at her hotel in southern Seoul.
Nah is in the middle of her Korea tour, but even after performing in three different cities, including Jeonju and Busan, for the past week, she didn't look a bit tired, smiling and laughing throughout the interview.
She is visiting local cities with multi-instrumentalist Mathias Eick form Norway, a rising musician in the European jazz scene.
Although Nah blushed and declined that she deserved the title of ``Korean international jazz artist,'' the singer has had her share of fame and respect throughout her career, both in France and Korea.
``I was in Poland and the poster said `Korea's Norah Jones.' I think people needed something to explain who this small, Asian woman who sang jazz was. For me, it's an honor to be compared with such a famous and talented artist,'' she said.
Thanks to her parents, who were also musicians, Nah had the chance to listen to various genres of music from a young age. Discovering her interest in chansons, she majored in French at university, but never imagined she would pursue a life in music until she was cast in a famous musical called ``Line 1.''
``I just quit my job at a clothing company and I auditioned with my friend and I got the part. That was when I realized that singing was possibly something I could do,'' she said.
At 26, she packed up her bags and moved to France to attend CIM, one of the oldest jazz schools in Europe, not knowing a thing about jazz, but with the determination to learn more.
For the next five years, Nah found herself deeply attached to the genre and started to develop as an artist.
``I was lucky to be studying in Europe where there were so many shades of jazz. It's hard to categorize jazz according to the country, but I think European jazz has something different. All of the countries have their own version. It's hard to explain, but there is a special characteristic of nationality in the music,'' she said.
``There are so many different colors, we can't just pinpoint one shade of it and say `that's jazz!' Anybody can do it. If I do it, then it can be called Youn-sun's jazz and so on.''
Compared to France and other European countries, Korea still has a long way to go in jazz, but Nah said she saw hope for its development through various festivals, including the Jarasum Jazz Festival held every year in Jara Island, Gyeonggi Province.
``It was my dream to have a jazz festival in Korea. The international jazz industry is quite small when you come up to a certain level. One time in Germany, an engineer showed me his T-shirt that read `Jarasum Jazz Festival,' his face beaming with pride. Artists come to our small country, and they leave falling in love with it,'' Nah said.
France has been like a second home to the singer, as she discovered her lifelong passion. Nah has stood on numerous stages and released several albums, and it was indeed an honor when the French government granted her the Chevalier Des Artes et des Lettres, an order given to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the arts.
``It was a surprise and I am very grateful. I simply did what I do best,'' she said.
Traveling around the world, performing on several prestigious stages such as Jazz at Lincoln Center and meeting veteran artists helped her broaden her perspective and also discover her dream future.
``There are a couple of memorable performances I have attended in my life. There was one by Sheila Jordan who is in her 80s. I started crying from the first note until the very end. She talked about her life and legendary musicians. It was real jazz,'' Nah said, her eyes sparkling.
``Jazz is like classical music. It never gets old. If I still find myself singing even in my 70s and 80s, I would like to play music that never grows old: a singer who can perform and breathe with the younger generation.''
Nah's most recent album is called ``Voyage,'' and when asked why she chose that title, she smiled.
``It's been a long time since I started pursuing music, and now I have found myself working in a new environment. I wonder sometimes `have I anchored to a safe, stable place, or have I just been washed away to an island?' It's been a journey, literally ever since the first day I stepped on French soil,'' said Nah.
``I still wonder every day where I am going next.''

나윤선 재즈와 함께 성숙
음악이 일부 사람들에게 꿈일지 모르지만 재즈 아티스트 나윤선 (40)에게 그것은 단순한 우연이었다.
그녀는 ``솔직히 말해 음악이 우연히 왔기 때문에 떠난다 해도 불평할 순 없다''고 인터뷰에서 말했다.
콘서트 투어 중인 나윤선은 지난 1주 동안 전주, 부산 등 이미 세 도시에서 공연했지만 인터뷰 내내 웃으면서 전혀 피로해 보이지 않았다.
그녀는 유럽 재즈계에서 가장 열정적인 뮤지션 중의 하나로 꼽히는 노르웨이 출신의 마티아스 에익과 함께 투어를 하고 있다.
`한국의 국제 재즈 아티스트'란 타이틀에 몸 둘 바를 모르는 나윤선에게 적어도 프랑스와 한국에서의 명성과 존경은 당연한 듯하다.
그녀는 ``폴란드에 있을 때 본 포스터에서 `한국의 노라 존스'란 타이틀을 봤다. 재즈를하는 아시아의 이 작은 여성을 설명하는 데 무엇인가가 필요했던 것 같다. 그렇게 유명하고 재능있는 아티스트와 비교된다는 게 더할 나위 없는 영예''라고 말했다.
나윤션은 음악가였던 부모 덕분에 어렸을 때부터 다양한 장르의 음악을 들을 기회가 있었다. 그녀는 샹송에 대한 흥미를 발견하고 대학에서 불어를 전공했지만 유명 뮤지컬 `지하철 1호선'에 캐스팅 될 때까지는 평생 음악을 하게 될 줄은 상상도 못했다.
그녀는 ``의류회사를 그만두고 친구와 함께 오디션을 봐 배역을 얻었다. 그때 음악이 내가 할 수 있는 것일지도 모른다고 느꼈다''고 말했다.
나윤선은 26살의 나이에 짐을 꾸려 재즈에 대해서는 아무 것도 모르면서 더 배우겠다는 일념만으로 유럽에서 가장 오랜 재즈스쿨의 하나인 프랑스의 CIM에 입학했다.
그 뒤 5년 동안 재즈에 푹 빠져 아티스트로서의 길을 모색했다.
``재즈의 많은 색깔이 있는 유럽에서 공부할 수 있었다는 게 행운이었다. 나라에 따라 재즈를 분류하기는 어렵지만 유럽 재즈는 무언가 다른 게 있다. 각 나라가 나름의 버전이 있었고, 설명하기는 어렵지만 음악에 특별히 국적이란 게 있을지도 모른다.''
재즈에 관한 한 프랑스 등 유럽 국가에 비해 한국이 갈 길은 멀지만 나윤선은 자라섬에서 매년 열리는 자라섬 축제를 비롯한 여러 축제를 통해 발전 가능성은 충분하다고 말한다.
그녀는 ``한국에서 재즈축제를 여는 게 꿈이었다. 어느 단계에 오르면 재즈계는 상당히 좁아진다. 한번은 독일에서 한 엔지니어가 `자라섬 재즈축제'라고 쓰여진 티셔츠를 자랑스럽게 보여준 적이 있다. 아티스트들은 이 작은 나라에 왔다가 사랑에 빠져 떠난다''고 말했다.
나윤선에게 평생의 열정을 발견한 프랑스는 제2의 고향이다. 프랑스에서 여러 무대에 섰고 여러 앨범도 발표한 그녀에게 프랑스정부가 재즈에 대한 공로를 인정해 훈장을 수여한 것은 대단한 영예였다.
나윤선은 전세계를 여행하고 링컨센터 등 권위있는 여러 무대에 서면서 유명 아티스트들을 만나면서 시야를 넓히고 미래를 발견할 수 있었다.
그녀는 ``일생을 털어 몇 번의 기억할 만한 공연을 봤다. 한번은 80대의 셰일라 조던 공연에서 첫 곡부터 시작해 끝날 때까지 울었다. 그녀는 자신의 인생과 전설적인 뮤지션들에 대해 얘기했다. 진정한 재즈였다''고 말했다.
