Trot Singers Boycott Mnet Music Award

Jang Yoon-jeong, Park Hyun-bin and other top trot singers have announced they will boycott the year-end music awards to be hosted by Mnet, a cable music channel.

An agency representing the singers, Inwoo Production, said Monday the singers would not participate in the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), questioning the fairness and standards in selecting candidates for the newly established trot music award.

More than anything else, the selection process lacked surveys and public relations efforts, the entertainment company said, adding that Mnet's arbitrary guidelines are unacceptable.

Mnet selected candidates from among those who submitted music videos. However, only a few trot singers produce music videos.

Inwoo also raised questions regarding a late change of candidates, saying that its request to exclude Park Hyun-bin from the list has not been accepted.

Jang, 29, is a semi-trot singer who shot to fame in early 2005 with her single ``Oemeona,'' which means ``Oh my goodness.'' Since then, she has released a series of hit trot songs.

Trot, often called ``ppongjjak,'' is a genre of Korean pop music. Jang was one of the youngest trot singers to help bring it into the spotlight in recent years.
