The union at the state-run Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) asked its president and chief executive officer Jung Yun-joo to resign, Wednesday.

Yonhap News reported the KBS union conducted a poll of its members, which showed that 80 percent wanted Jung to step down from office. Union members believe Jung does not have the ability to lead KBS into the future.

The union said they want a new president who will be independent from the government. They also want a president who has significant experience in broadcasting, and has integrity. Jung, a former reporter with the daily Hankyoreh newspaper, has been known as being pro-Roh Moo-hyun.

The union also sent a letter to Jung asking him to resign. They criticized him for his failure to boost the company's profits and raise subscription fees.

It also demanded a new and fair system for selecting the KBS president.

Jung was first appointed as KBS president and CEO in 2003. President Roh Moo-hyun reappointed Jung to the position for another three-year term in November 2006.

The South Korean president appoints the KBS president and CEO, following the recommendation of the KBS Board of Governors.
