Jolie Tops Forbes Celebrity 100

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie is the world's most powerful celebrity, according to the annual Forbes Celebrity 100 list released this week. Jolie overtook Oprah Winfrey, the winner for the past two years, for the number one spot.

The survey results are based on a Forbes formula, CNN reported, that takes into account gross salary and level of fame. Matthew Miller, Forbes senior editor, said the list is meant to measure overall power and influence in the world. Although Winfrey made more than 10 times as much as Jolie in the past year, she was outranked in media exposure.

"When you look at the components of fame and earnings, you can get a good vibe as to who's important this year and who's not," Miller said. "Angelina Jolie is, by far, the most famous celebrity on the planet."

Unable to go a day without coverage of her marriage, children or philanthropy, Jolie's broad range of talents "lends to a more popular, more robust and, frankly, more valuable brand," Miller said. He estimated that she was on more than 20 times more magazine covers than Winfrey last year.

Madonna, Beyonce Knowles and Tiger Woods complete the top five of the Celebrity 100. Names that fell off this year include those of J.K. Rowling and Johnny Depp, while the biggest newcomer is U.S. President Barack Obama, at number 49. He is the first sitting head of state to appear in the Forbes celebrity survey.

Models, chefs, athletes, authors, musicians and political pundits are all eligible for the list. All entertainment-related earnings from June 2008 to June 2009 are included in the survey.
