40th Modern Korean LiteraturebrTranslation Award

Listen

In 2009, The Korea Times will hold the 40th Modern Korean Literature Translation Awards. This annual competition rewards English translations of works of contemporary Korean literature in two categories: fiction and poetry. Applicants may submit one translation of a work of Korean fiction of any length or between four and six poems by the same poet. Applicants may only submit one translation in any one category. RULES FOR FICTION SUBMISSIONS Candidates should submit an English translation of one work of fiction: a novel, novella or short story. The original Korean work should have been published in or after 1980. Longer works will not automatically be given preference, although some credit will be given for the additional effort involved. Accuracy and readability will both be taken into account in judging. RULES FOR POETRY SUBMISSIONS Candidates should submit English translations of no less than four and no more than six poems, all by the same poet. The original poems should have been first published in or after 1990. In both categories, the judges will be looking for accurate translations in good English of significant works of contemporary literature. Works already published in English translation must not be translated again for the contest. Would-be contestants who are uncertain if their proposed work has already been translated should email a query to The Korea Times email address at ktculture@gmail.com For information on translated literary works, candidates can refer to the search engine of the database on the Internet site of the Korean Literature Translation Instititue at https://www.ltikorea.net Translators are strongly encouraged to work as a team, combining native speakers of both languages. Someone who has received an award in a category is not eligible for further prizes in that category for the following three years. Entries must be submitted along with the original Korean texts, and biographical notes on the author and translators, including the full mailing address, telephone and e-mail addresses of the translators. Manuscripts must be computer-printed and double-spaced with a cover page containing the title of the original work and the name of the translators. The translators’ names must not appear anywhere else on the manuscript because the screening will be carried out anonymously. Applicants’ manuscripts will not be returned. We especially encourage young translators to take part in this competition, which aims to promote better understanding of Korean literature in the world. All copyrights belong to The Korea Times. The awards are conducted under the sponsorship of the Korea Exchange Bank.
