Around this time of year, parents are expected to let their children know that Children's Day, May 5, belongs to them. If a visit to a theme park in the suburbs is out of the question due to chronic holiday traffic jams, some events at hotels could be a good alternative.

The Sheraton Grande Walkerhill's outdoor restaurant, the Jade Garden, is holding a barbecue picnic party on Children's Day.

At the party children can play with hula-hoops and join in shuttlecock games and a dance competition. Also, three magicians will show off their talent to amuse the guests.

As part of the lucky ticket draws, bingo and other games will be played. The winners will be awarded a selection of guest room tickets, the hotel's performance tickets or a wine set.

For more information, call (02) 455-5000.

Lotte Hotel World will hold its 10th family bake-a-cake event in the lobby from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Children's Day.

The hotel's chefs will participate in the event to help bake special family cakes. Additional activities include a clown making balloons, face-painting and caricature drawing.

The best cakes will be awarded with prizes including a one-night stay at the hotel, buffet restaurant coupons and the hotel's brewery pub Mega CC coupons.

The participation fee is 220,000 won for a family of four. The fee includes a lunch buffet and cake ingredients. For more information, call (02) 411-7411.

Lotte Hotel Seoul's Italian restaurant Peninsula will present a ``Family Pizza Making'' event from May 3 to May 5 and from May 10 to May 12.

The event will offer shaver sets, red wines, tea boxes or olive oils as gifts, with a participation fee of 100,000 won. For more information, call (02) 317-7121.

The Westin Chosun Seoul is hosting a special event for Children's Day at the hotel's grand ballroom from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m.

The venue will be transformed into a fairy tale castle with children dressed as princes and princesses and participating in other events such as entertainment contests and creative games.

The hotel will offer a buffet priced at 40,000 won for children and 60,000 won for adults. For more information, call (02) 317-0072.

The Grand InterContinental Seoul's Grand Cafe will be featuring a Korean culinary Buffet on May 5.

The price for the buffet is 55,000 won but a free meal will be offered to one family guest child aged under 12.

The hotel's buffet restaurant, Grand Kitchen will also offer gifts of helium balloons and hold a face painting event for kids. The price for lunch is 50,000 won and dinner, 60,000 won for adults, and 27,000 won for children. For more information, call (02) 555-5656.

The Hyatt Regency Incheon is offering an ``Explore Package'' that allows guests to enjoy a short trip to nearby tourist attractions ― Muuido, Silmido and Ulwang-ri Beach.

The package includes a one-night stay in a King Room suite, complimentary breakfast for two, free golf driving range ticket for two, late check-out until 3 p.m. and free access to the swimming pool, fitness center and sauna.
