Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said Monday that his state visit to Britain will lead to new cooperation between the two countries in the security realm, including in cybersecurity and the defense industry.
Yoon made the remark during a dinner meeting with a group of around 190 Koreans living in Britain, shortly after arriving for a four-day state visit.
"Through my visit, Korea and Britain will build a new cooperation system in the security realm, including in cybersecurity and the defense industry," he said during the event at a London hotel. "Not only that, we will restart negotiations to revise the Korea-Britain free trade agreement and further strengthen the foundation for cooperation in supply chains and trade."
Yoon also said the two countries will greatly expand the scope of their cooperation to the science and technology sectors, including artificial intelligence, nuclear energy, bio, space, semiconductors and clean energy.
"Today, South Korea and Britain are partners in the universal values of freedom, human rights and the rule of law and an economic community connected by a free trade market," he said.
Yoon thanked the Korean community for their contributions to the bilateral relationship and promised the government's assistance and support through the Overseas Koreans Agency launched in June, in line with one of his campaign pledges.
He recalled the help Britain extended during the 1950-53 Korean War, when Britain sent 80,000 troops to fight alongside South Korea and more than 1,000 of them paid the ultimate sacrifice, and afterward during Korea's industrialization.
He also thanked King Charles III for the interest and love he showed for Korea and its culture during his recent visit to New Malden, a neighborhood in London with a large number of Korean residents. (Yonhap)
