For centuries, tarot, a set of cards that are believed to have their origin in Central Europe from the Late Middle Ages, has enchanted curious minds from all walks of life ― whether they are seeking to have their fortune read, trying to reflect on their life decisions or simply looking for a fun party trick for the night.
유럽 중부에서 중세 후기부터 유래한 것으로 알려진 카드 세트인 ‘타로 카드'는 수세기 동안 운명을 읽거나, 일생 중대사와 관련한 결정을 돌아보거나, 밤 파티의 즐거운 오락거리를 찾는 각계각층 사람들의 마음 속 호기심을 매혹시켰다.
But another group who have fallen under the spell of these cards is none other than artists. As each of the 78 cards ― like the Fool, the Hanged Man and the Devil ― features an illustration or a pictorial symbol relevant to its meaning, the whole deck then becomes a visual playground for those with a burst of imagination.
그러나 타로 카드의 매력에 빠진 또 다른 집단이 있으니, 바로 ‘예술가'다. ‘바보(The Fool)', ‘매달린 남자(The Hanged Man)', ‘악마(The Devil)' 등을 포함한 78장의 카드 각각의 의미 및 그와 관련된 그림 및 회화적 기호가 있어, 전체 타로 카드는 폭발적인 상상력의 소유자들을 위한 시각적 놀이터가 된다.
Illustrator Kim Soo-jin is no exception.
일러스트레이터 김수진 역시 예외는 아니다.
In her tarot deck reimagined with a Korean-style twist, the skeletal Grim Reaper wielding a scythe on the Death card is replaced by "jeoseung saja," or a messenger from the afterlife, clad in a dark "gat" (wide-brimmed horsehair hat) and "hanbok" (traditional Korean attire).
한국식으로 재해석한 김수진의 타로 카드에서는 ‘죽음' 카드에서 뼈만 남은 죽음의 신이 칼을 휘두르는 모습이 "갓(챙이 넓은 말갈기 모자)"을 쓰고 "한복(한국 전통 복장)"을 입은 사후 세계 전달자인 "저승사자"로 대체된다.
Taking center stage on the Devil card, a symbol of temptation and lust, is "gumiho," a legendary nine-tailed fox that can shapeshift into a seductress in order to consume men's livers.
‘악마' 카드에는 유혹과 욕정의 상징이며, 남성의 간을 먹기 위해 초자연적인 힘을 빌려 형태를 바꾸고 유혹하는 꼬리가 아홉 개 달린 전설적인 "구미호"가 중심을 차지하고 있다.
And the Moon card recalls the Korean folk tale, "The Sun and the Moon," the origin story of the two celestial entities.
‘달' 카드는 또 해와 달의 기원 설화인 '해와 달이 된 오누이'이라는 한국 설화를 떠올리게 한다.
In the tale, a young sister and a brother successfully outwit a hungry tiger in disguise and after praying for a rope from the sky as a means of escape, it manifests and they climb onto it to become the moon and the sun, respectively.
이 설화에서 오빠와 여동생은 변장한 굶주린 호랑이보다 한 수 앞선 후 탈출을 위해 하늘에서 동아줄을 내려달라고 기도하고, 줄이 나타나자 타고 올라가 각각 해와 달이 된다.
