The nation’s human rights agency said Friday it is scrutinizing two alleged cases of torture by police on criminal suspects.
The National Human Rights Commission said two suspects had filed petitions with its torture reporting center, saying they had been tortured during interrogation.
The center was launched last month after the rights agency found that officers at Yangcheon Police Station in Seoul had used torture to force testimonies and confessions from drug trafficking suspects. Five police officers are currently on trial.
An official from the agency said that the petitions are one-sided allegations that still need further investigation to conclude whether torture had indeed occurred.
An earlier case forced the National Police Agency to come up with a set of preemptive measures, including requirements for police stations to videotape the entire interrogation process of suspects in major crimes.
