Shinil Educational Foundation appointed Lee Eun-joo, 48, a professor of social welfare at Seoul Cyber University (SCU), as the school's next president, the university spokesman said Thursday.
The foundation runs three education institutions ― SCU, Shinil High School and Shinil Middle School.
Lee will officially take office as the university's ninth president at her inauguration at the school's campus in Gangbuk-gu, northern Seoul, today.
The new president's term is for three years.
She is concurrently executive director of the International Association of University Presidents.
"Lee has been trying to introduce future-oriented education in our school by cooperating with major universities throughout the world," the spokesman said. "I think the foundation recognized her hard work," he added.
As a member of the Korean Academy of Social Welfare, Lee is an expert on social welfare.
She finished the coursework in social welfare from Seoul National University and then earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin in the United States.
Lee served as a full-time faculty member at SCU for a long time and held a number of posts including dean of admissions and head of the department of student affairs.
She served as vice president of the school from March 2016 until recently.
As vice president, she launched an internet page called Dream School where she uploaded book reviews of 50 self-help books that she chose.
"After 15 years of teaching, I came to the conclusion that reading is very important," Lee said in a video clip introducing the page. "I decided to offer this kind of service to encourage our students to read more books. I know many of them have jobs so they don't have much time to read."
On the page, accessible through the university's official homepage, anyone can read 50 book reviews by Lee.
Established in 2000, Seoul Cyber University offers 24 majors, the most popular of which are social welfare, psychology and counseling, with about 60 percent of the total number of students enrolled in classes taught in these departments. The school also runs two graduate courses.
SCU has 10,747 undergraduate students and 396 graduate students.
As of 2017, the school has graduated more than 28,000 alumni who have been working in diverse sections of society.
SCU is the first cyber university to establish its own campus having state-of-the-art facilities.
