President Moon Jae-in has vowed to mobilize all possible resources to bolster public safety, following a string of recent fires and other deadly accidents that claimed dozens of lives.
In his New Year press conference at Cheong Wa Dae, Wednesday, Moon stressed the importance of establishing a permanent system to deal with large-scale accidents or disasters instead of one-time, makeshift measures.
"As of the New Year, we've set the nation's safety as the top priority and we will try to maintain it systematically," Moon said.
His remarks show a strong will to prevent more disasters like a recent fire incident in Jecheon, and fishing boat sinking near Yeongheung Island, Incheon.
Moon pledged to take steps during his term to prevent suicides and strengthen traffic and industrial safety.
"Safety issues on infectious diseases, goods and chemical products are not exceptions and we will make periodic reports," Moon said.
Sexual violence against minors and women is another important government-wide agenda, he said.
Moon also promised to expand welfare policies to raise the quality of people's lives. "Korea enjoys a per capita gross national income surpassing $30,000 and we need to raise the quality of life that suits such a standard. The government will take care of people's living more meticulously with a more effective budget plan," he said.
Beginning July, Moon's administration will cover extra travel expenses of workers as part of a plan to encourage them to take their annual leave and enjoy a balanced life.
Moon's team will also supplement parents' childrearing costs. Parents with children under age six will receive a monthly 100,000 won children's allowance starting September and the government will expand the number of national childcare centers to 450.
"A life cannot be happy if you are living with long hours of labor and working overtime. The government will push the plan to cut labor hours and make people leave work at the regular time," said Moon.
The President will focus on reducing people's basic living costs for medical treatment, housing and education.
Starting this month, Moon is adopting systems to take care of dementia patients to reinforce the National Health Service guarantee.
Lower-income groups will also receive financial support on cultural consumption when they purchase tickets for a movie or concert.
