North Korea is insisting that the United State send a high-ranking official to Pyongyang if it wants American missionary detainee Kenneth Bae released, according to Voice of America (VOA).
Bae's mother, Bae Myung-hee, told VOA Thursday letters and phone calls she has received from her son since June of last year have made that clear.
"For about a year, the North has kept suggesting to my son that a high-ranked diplomat is needed for him to be released," Bae said.
Bae referred to female American journalists who were imprisoned in the North in 2009. "As former U.S. President Bill Clinton went to North Korea to secure the release of the journalists, similar effort is required for my son," Bae continued.
She added that according to the North, charges against her son were more serious than those faced by the female journalists.
Kenneth Bae, a 45-year-old Korean-American Christian missionary, was detained in North Korea in November 2012 for "anti-state crimes." The North sentenced him to 15 years hard labor.
한국계 미국인 케네스 배(한국명 배준호) 씨를 억류 중인 북한 당국이 배 씨에게 미국의 대통령급 인사가 방북해야 석방될 수 있을 것이라고 언급한 것으로 알려졌다.
케네스 배 씨의 어머니 배명희 씨는 18일 미국의 소리(VOA) 방송과의 전화 통화에서 아들이 지난해 6월 보낸 편지와 전화 등을 통해 몇 차례 이같은 내용을 전한 적이 있다고 말했다고 VOA가 전했다.
배명희 씨는 2009년 미국인 여기자 억류 사건을 언급하며 '당시 여기자들 석방을 위해 방북했던 빌 클린턴 전 대통령과 맞먹는 지위의 인사가 와야 아들이 집으로 돌아갈 수 있다는 것이 북한 당국의 논리'라며 '북한은 아들의 혐의가 당시 미국 여기자들보다 더 무겁다고 주장하고 있다'고 전했다.
이어 케네스 배 씨가 편지에서 2009년 당시에도 북한 핵실험으로 한반도 정세가 위태로웠지만, 클린턴 전 대통령의 방북으로 억류 여기자들의 귀환이 가능했다고 강조했다며 이는 북한이 전직 대통령을 특사로 원하는 것을 암시한다고 VOA가 보도했다.
다만 배명희 씨는 '북한 당국이 아들에게 '대통령급'이라는 조건을 항상 언급한 것은 아니어서 이후 입장이 변했는지는 알지 못한다'며 '북한은 1년 전부터 아들에게 고위급 특사 방북의 필요성을 거듭 제기하고 있다'고 덧붙였다. (연합뉴스)
