Rep. Lee Jung-hyun |
"During the Chuseok holidays last week, one of the most critical comments I heard mentioned rewards," Rep. Lee Jung-hyun said during the party's Supreme Council meeting held in the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium.
"I certainly can't take this money after hearing so much criticism," said Lee. He picked up a white envelope, containing the money of 3.8 million won, and said he would return it to the National Assembly.
Like other lawmakers Lee spent Chusok in his hometown district and constituency of Suncheon-Gokseong, South Jeolla Province. In the July 30 by-elections Lee won a seat over the main opposition News Politics Alliances for Democracy (NPAD) candidate.
He explained he didn't deserve the 3.8 million because he didn't earn it. "The criticism directed at lawmakers described them as brazenly receiving allowances without working. The people also denounced lawmakers for having failed to pass a single bill," said Lee.
Following his move, there is growing attention as to whether other politicians will follow suit or not.
Lee also denounced a remark by the NPAD's Sul Hoon, chairman of the National Assembly Education, Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, on President Park Geun-hye's whereabouts when the ferry Sewol was sinking in seas off the southeastern island of Jindo.
"It is a lie that the President was seeing someone during the sinking," said Lee. "The comment came not accidentally but intentionally. Apart from anything else, he attempted to defame women," he continued.
"If Sul had considered how his mother, wife, and a daughter would have felt about the comment, he should have been more cautious. To avoid an advent of low-quality culture and education led by Sul, he should resign," the lawmaker said.
