A man and woman died while descending a device in an attempt to escape a hotel that caught fire on Christmas Day, police said Sunday.
The fire broke out at 1:15 a.m. Sunday, on the eighth floor of a small hotel in Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province.
The victims — Park, 45, and Sung, 39, — were staying in the room next to the room where the fire started.
Police believe the fire was started by a candle left unattended by two other guests who had fallen asleep in the room next to the victims. The two guests responsible for the negligence are under investigation to discern the exact cause of the fire.
The fire destroyed 30 square meters inside the building, causing about 20 million won worth of damage.
