Lotte Group Vice Chairman Lee In-won was considered the "No. 2 man" of the nation's fifth-largest business empire.
He was known as one of the closest aides to group founder Shin Kyuk-ho and chairman Shin Dong-bin who had shared details of the group's business activities and even the two Shins' private affairs for many years. So the prosecution had high expectations with its questioning of him on Friday, believing he would admit to something that paved the way to summon the two Shins at the center of a growing corruption scandal involving Lotte.
Lee was born on August 12, 1947, at Gyeongsan City in Gyeonggi Province and graduated from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies with a bachelor's degree in Japanese language. He started working at Lotte Hotels & Resorts in 1973 and, after 14 years, became the director of Lotte Shopping.
In 1997, he was Head Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lotte Shopping Co.
Over the years, Lee gained trust from the group's top leadership and became its vice chairman in 2011.
