The elementary school teacher who caused a media stir by inflicting severe corporal punishment on his pupils will be fired by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.
The Seoul education office said Friday that its disciplinary committee has decided to sack the 52-year-old teacher, identified only as Oh, who taught at an elementary school in the Dongjak District in Seoul.
The disciplinary decision will be finalized at a session early next week, officials said.
Oh was caught beating his students in a video clip in mid-July, inviting fierce criticism from parents and civic groups. In the clip, Oh slapped his student in the face, swore at him and pushed him to the floor and kicked him several times. On the Internet, he has been nicknamed “Oh palm blast” as he knocked down students on the floor with a slap to the face.
It is the first time that a teacher has been fired by the education authorities for meting out severe physical punishment on students.
The teacher is expected to file a petition or counter-suit in reaction to the decision of the education office.
