On the occasion of G20 Seoul Summit

The Korea Times and the Korea Institute of Public Administration (KIPA) will host the Korea Development Model international conference on Oct. 21 at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul.

The one-day international seminar will be held just weeks before the G20 Summit.

The conference is intended to help policymakers, envoys and students of developing countries, namely non-G20 countries, learn what’s behind the success of Korea’s development models, according to KIPA President Park Eung-kyuk.

As part of the conference, The Korea Times ran a 60-part series on Korea Development Models under the title “Rags to Riches” from March till August in cooperation with KIPA. The series will be published in a book for distribution worldwide.

Kim Cae-one, chairman of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, will deliver congratulatory remarks together with Park Dae-won, president of the Korea International Cooperation Agency.

The conference will be divided into three sessions: Korea’s development and the role of the government; development model cases in the Korean context; and the application of the Korean development model to developing countries. They will crystallize the driving force behind Korea’s successes and the government’s role over the past six decades.

Keynote speakers and presenters include Cho Lee-jay, chairman of Northeast Asia Economic Forum, Hawaii; Oh Kongdan, senior fellow of the Brookings Institution; Korea Times columnist Michael Breen; KIPA principal research fellow Hwang Hie-shin; Choi Yearn-hong, consultant and columnist; Andrew Salmon, contributing writer, CNN & The Times; KIPA research fellow Lee Jung-hee; Bernard Rowan, professor of Chicago State University; and Yun Mi-kyung, professor of the Catholic University of Korea.

Other distinguished participants include Ahn Young-sop, visiting professor, GSIS, Chung-Ang University; Lee Jay-min, professor of Yonsei University; Kim Joon-kyung, professor of KDISchool of Public Policy and Management; and Robert Neff, a specialist in the modern history of the Joseon Kingdom.

Ahn Choong-yong, distinguished professor of Chung-Ang University, and journalist Don Kirk will chair the sessions. Ambassadors from Bangladesh (Shahidul Islam) and Peru (Marcela Lopez Bravo) will join the meeting as discussants.

Simultaneous interpretation will be available in Korean and English. Students from developing countries are encouraged to participate by sending an e-mail to dahae@kipa.re.kr. There is no participation fee.
