Photos of a chick hatching out of an egg in a packed carton are going viral.
According to Yonhap News Agency, an egg on a carton cracked Tuesday morning and a dark gray feather-covered chick came out cheeping. It happened on a sunshine-blasted built-in balcony of an apartment in Gangneung, Gangwon Province. The carton was there for days basking in sizzling summer heat that sent average temperatures hovering over 35 degrees Celsius.
In Korea it is legal to sell fertilized eggs for consumption.
The incident reflects the exorbitantly hot summer heat that has gripped the Korean Peninsula for nearly two weeks.
Meanwhile the midday high in the small district of Shinryoung-myeon in Yeongcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, reached 40.3 degrees (at 3:27 p.m.), "melting" the previous record of 40 degrees set in Daegu, Aug. 1, 1942, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).
The KMA has been collecting weather data since 1907.
The new high was recorded at an automatic weather station (AWS) in the town's Shinnyeong Elementary School under the supervision of the KMA's Daegu office.
