Republic of Korea Navy Lieutenant Commander Jang Jae-hyun says The Korea Times provides him with more information and a wider global perspective than Korean language newspapers offer.

"I usually read The Korea Times during lunchtime as I can take my time in reading the stories," Jang said.

He said he started to read The Korea Times when he entered the Korea Naval Academy, to improve his English skills as he thought he could access a wider range of information from around the world through the global language.

"Learning and improving my English was not just a matter of getting good grades in tests anymore, it was more about learning more information" he said. "I especially enjoy reading the politics section as I like to compare the viewpoints in the English newspaper with those of vernacular publications, as The Korea Times considers the concerns of overseas readers."

Jang said learning about overseas perspectives on domestic issues, especially domestic politics and military policies, helps him develop a balanced outlook and viewpoint.

He noted that an article published in June this year interviewing foreign veterans, in which they talked about their memories of the 1950-53 Korean War, impressed him.

"I believe the article not only helped Koreans who did not experience the war themselves learn about foreign veterans' sacrifice, but also showed foreign readers that Korea still remembers and remains grateful for the sacrifice of countries that participated in the war," he said.

Delivering a congratulatory message to The Korea Times on its 70th anniversary, Jang said: "The Korea Times is a precious friend who has helped me navigate the sea of knowledge. I sincerely congratulate my old friend on its 70th birthday and express my gratitude. People from all over the world will meet and remember Korea through The Korea Times. I hope you will cruise on to many more wonderful years."
