The Korea Times invites readers to enjoy the cool winter air at one of Korea's biggest cultural sites at the 462nd Turtle Marathon this Saturday.
The event, organized by the Hankook Ilbo, the sister paper of The Korea Times, and supervised by Suwon City and Gyeonggi Provincial Government, will take place at Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. The starting point will be Haenggung, a palace built within the walls of Hwaseong. The walkathon will continue through the North-West Pavilion, West Gate, North Gate and end its 3.7-kilometers course at the starting point.
Built from 1794 to 1796 during the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910), the walls of Hwaseong Fortress surround Suwon, the provincial capital of Gyeonggi Province. When King Jeongjo (1752-1800) moved his father's tomb to Suwon at the end of the 18th century, he surrounded it with massive walls that stretched for 5.7 kilometers. Hwaseong Fortress was designated a World Heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1997.
All participants will be offered drinks provided by Nongshim and a prize draw will be held at the end of the event. Prizes include a Seiko wristwatch, duck meat gift sets, a large-size LED TV and others. Free duck meat tasting will be offered to all participants. Special performances by a B-boy group and Joy Brass Band will highlight the event. A free chicken meat tasting will also be held.
Students who participate in the cleanup afterward will receive certification for the completion of three hours of volunteer work. Students can register at www.1365.go.kr.
