President Moon Jae-in offered condolences Sunday on the death of U.S. Republican Sen. John McCain, calling him a "symbol of the American value of freedom."

McCain, 81, died at his home in Arizona on Saturday (local time) after a yearlong battle with brain cancer.

"I wish for the freedom and peace he pursued to take root on the Korean Peninsula and all over the world," Moon wrote in a Facebook posting.

Moon remembered that McCain firmly supported the South Korea-U.S. alliance and led efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation.

"His interest in the Republic of Korea, friendship and warm smile will not be forgotten," he said. (Yonhap)
