KAI will export T-50s to Thailand

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) said Thursday that it has signed a $110 million deal to export four T-50TH supersonic trainer jets to Thailand.

Under the deal, the Korean company will deliver the trainer jets within 30 months.
The signing ceremony took place at the JW Marriott Hotel in Seoul.

Thailand has selected the KAI T-50TH over the Chinese-made L15 to replace aging trainer aircraft for its Air Force, according to sources.

"Thailand, which has chosen countries whose air weapon industries are advanced, selected an Asian country this time," KAI said in a statement.

"This contract will be an opportunity for KAI to establish a long term partnership with the Thai Air Force," it added, indicating that the export of more jets could follow.

Thailand has been operating L39 trainer jets made by the Czech Republic, and is replacing them as it has been more than 30 years since their production.

At the end of last year, the Thai government approved a budget to purchase four new trainers.

Competitors in a bidding battle included the United States, Russia and Italy as well as Korea and China.

Thailand has been interested in Korean-made weapons. It purchased a 500 billion won frigate made by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering for its Navy in 2013.

KAI developed the T-50 in 2001 with technical assistance from the U.S. aerospace giant Lockheed Martin. About 2 trillion won was invested in the large-scale national project to develop the homegrown supersonic trainer jet that took eight years to realize.

The Korean company, based in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, has also manufactured aerobatic and combat variants, namely the T-50B, TA-50 and FA-50, as well as the Surion utility helicopter.

Some 50 T-50s have been deployed in the South Korean Air Force, while 16 were exported to Indonesia in 2011.

Korea had also signed a deal with Iraq to export 24 T-50IQs in 2013, and with the Philippines to export 12 FA-50PHs, a light combat version of the T-50, in 2014.

The government is also seeking to sell 24 FA-50s to Peru by participating in the country's fighter purchase project.

Sources said selling the light attack aircraft along with programs to train pilots would be worth about $1 billion. Considering the necessary logistical support, the total amount of exports could reach $2 billion.

Lima is expected to select a fighter jet model within the year among bidders.
First unveiled in January 2006, the most advanced variant of the T-50 family operated by the South Korean Air Force, the FA-50 was developed as a replacement for the Air Force's F-5E/F when the aging fighters are retired.



국산 T-50 고등훈련기 태국에 수출한다

1억1천만 달러 규모 수출 계약, 미 공군 고등훈련기 사업에 긍정 영향

미국의 록히드마틴 기술 지원으로 우리나라에서 생산한 T-50 고등훈련기가 태국의 훈련기 기종으로 선정됐다.

경남 사천 한국항공우주산업㈜(KAI)은 17일 태국 정부와 T-50TH(T-50의 태국 수출형) 4대의 수출 계약을 체결했다고 밝혔다.

계약 금액은 1억1천만 달러 규모이며 계약 후 30개월 내 모두 납품하는 조건이다.

계약식은 서울 메리어트 호텔에서 하성용 KAI 사장과 태국 좀 릉스왕 특별획득위원회 위원장(공군 참모장)을 비롯한 양측 관계자가 참석한 가운데 열렸다.

태국은 자국 훈련기로 체코산 L39기를 운영하고 있지만 제작된 지 30년이 넘어 기종 교체 사업을 추진해왔다.

태국 내각은 작년 말 훈련기 4대 도입을 위한 공군 예산 37억 바트(약 1천250억원)를 승인한 바 있다.

이 훈련기 사업에는 한국·미국·중국·러시아·이탈리아 기종이 경합했으나 T-50TH와 중국의 L15기가 막판까지 경합을 펼친 것으로 알려졌다.

항공선진국의 첨단 무기체계를 구매해 온 태국 공군이 아시아 국가인 대한민국의 T-50TH를 결정한 것은 이례적으로, KAI와 태국 공군 간의 장기 동반관계를 맺는 계기가 될 전망이다.

T-50TH는 현재 태국 공군이 운용하는 노후화된 L-39 고등훈련 및 전술입문기를 대체할 것으로 알려졌다.

T-50을 고친 경공격기인 FA-50 등 T-50 계열의 수출은 2011년 인도네시아 16대, 2013년 이라크 24대, 지난해 필리핀 12대 등 3건이 있다.

KAI는 이번 태국 수출로 미 공군의 고등훈련기 사업(T-X) 수출에 긍정적 영향을 미칠 것으로 기대하고 있다.

T-X 사업은 미 공군 고등훈련기 350대 및 지상훈련장비와 후속지원 등 총 100억 달러(10조원) 규모이며, 전투훈련을 위한 가상적기 150여대와 미 해군과 해병대 훈련기 500여대를 포함하면 1천대 38조원 규모의 매머드급 시장이다.

KAI 하성용 사장은 '무역수지 적자가 큰 항공산업을 수출산업으로 전환해 항공선진국 진입을 견인하겠다'며 '수출은 국내 협력업체의 물량과 항공 인프라 저변을 튼튼히 하는 지름길로 청년 일자리 창출에도 이바지하겠다'고 말했다.

태국 수출 계약 사실이 알려지자 사천 본사는 축제 분위기다.

KAI는 본관 현관에 'T-50TH 태국 수출을 축하합니다'라고 적힌 플래카드를 내걸고 자축했다.

KAI 직원들은 '태국 공군이 T-50TH를 선정함으로써 T-50은 동아시아 지역의 명품 이미지를 한층 강화했다'고 자랑했다.

KAI 전략홍보팀 이명환 부장은 'KAI는 항공기 수출시장의 높은 진입 장벽과 항공 후발국의 약점을 극복하고 단기간에 국산 항공기 수출에 성공해 내수에서 수출 중심의 기업으로 빠르게 변모하고 있다'며 '올해 매출 목표 3조원 중 기체 구조물 포함 60% 이상을 수출로 채울 것으로 기대된다'고 말했다. (연합뉴스)
