South Korea reported 67 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, the biggest spike in around three weeks, due to a sharp rise in the number of imported cases according to the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).

Of the new cases, 31 came from overseas and the 36 others were locally transmitted. The community spreads in greater Seoul area remain unabated. The Seoul metropolitan area, where around half of the country's 50-million population lives, accounted for most of the newly added virus cases this month.

The surge in new daily cases is likely to prompt the government to reconsider the current social distancing practices which have been eased in early May.

There were no additional deaths, keeping the total death toll at 280.
