Korean doctors earn an average of 13 million won ($12,000) a month, according to a survey revealed Wednesday.
Ministry of Health and Welfare research shows doctors made 13,046,000 won a month in 2016. This was 4.3 times more than other professionals in the country (2,795,000 won, on average).
Doctors around the world tend to earn more than other professionals. But compared with other members of the OECD, a club of mostly rich countries, the gap is especially bigger here, according to the organization's data.
Notably, Korean doctors at clinics and small and medium hospitals earn more than those at big ones. The average salary of doctors at institutions with fewer than 100 beds was 19,960,000 won, compared with 9,190,000 won for doctors at major hospitals that have more than 500 beds. One of the reasons is that big hospitals usually allocate a bigger portion of their revenues for investment.
Physicians also work longer than workers in other fields. According to the Research Institute for Healthcare Policy early this month, they work 2,408 hours a year, on average, compared with 2,069 hours for workers in other fields.
