A Korea Airports Corp. (KAC)-led consortium has won a $30 million (34.7 billion won) bid to oversee and manage construction operations for the new Chinchero International Airport in Peru, the transport ministry said, Thursday.
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the four-way consortium, comprised of Dohwa Engineering, Kunwon Engineering, Hanmi Global and KAC, was named the preferred bidder to become the Project Management Office of the South American country's new airport project. Peru plans to build a 560 billion-won airport in Chinchero by 2024.
The consortium will be in charge of overseeing the whole project including selecting construction firms, contract management, quality inspection, design review and conducting a trial run.

The Peruvian government has been wanting to replace the existing Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport and decided to push forward with the G2G PMO project to assure safety and as the country lacks technology and airport construction experience.
Last month, four countries ― Korea, Spain, Canada and Turkey ― submitted their final business proposals and the Peru government chose Korea to oversee the new Chinchero International Airport project.
According to the ministry, it is Korea's first G2G infrastructure project and is meaningful given that private companies and governments are both taking part in the project. Expectations are also high as it will be Korea's first "smart airport" export, implementing state-of-the-art technology including artificial intelligence.
The two governments plan to seal the deal by late July after negotiating specific terms of the contract including project terms and price.
"This is a success case with both private firms and government working together to win the project," said Kim Yong-seog, director general for airport and air navigation policy at the transport ministry. "The government will continue to boost the country's construction market and economic growth. We will continue to give support to win additional overseas construction projects."
