In the growing presence of mobile platforms, "YouTuber" ― a YouTube content creator or personality ― is in the top 10 in a list of jobs elementary schoolchildren want, according to the Ministry of Education and the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training, Friday.
This is the first time that the online broadcasters have been included in the listing since the survey began in 2007.
According to the survey conducted on 27,200 elementary to high school students in June and July, online broadcasting presenter became the fifth-most desired job for elementary school students. It didn't even make the top 20 last year, showing a sharp rise in a short space of time.
The survey result reflects the lives of young children, who are exposed to and accustomed to using smartphones, and regularly watching videos through online broadcasting platforms such as YouTube.
"Beauty designers," which include hairstylists, makeup and nail polish artists, and tattooists, ranked sixth most popular for middle school pupils and fourth for high students. This could also be attributed to the same trend, as Korea has a large number of YouTubers who display their makeup knowhow through reviews and tutorials.
Elementary schoolchildren's most-desired job was athlete, followed by teacher, doctor, chef and YouTuber. Middle school students wanted to become teachers most, with the remaining four most popular jobs stated as police officer, doctor, athlete and chef. For high school students, teacher was also the most popular job, followed by nurse, police officer, beauty designer and soldier.
