He was 61, and was known to be receiving treatment for cancer of the large intestine, He died two months after resigning from the position.
He resigned last November due to health reasons. He joined the Korean Foreign Service in 1972, having been posted in New York, Washington, D.C., Kenya and Ireland.
Kwon was a foreign affairs advisor to the Lee Myung-bak camp during the presidential campaign in 2007, and was later on appointed as first foreign vice minister. He is survived by a wife and two children.
His funeral is to be held Saturday.
