The streets in front of the landmark KT&G Sangsangmadang building in Hongdae — the young and hip area in front of Hongik University in Mapo-gu, western Seoul — will come alive with performances by popular indie bands this Sunday.

Dubbed the “Hongday Festival,” the event features punk, electronic and pop music by seven bands. Some well-known names include Crying Nut, The Zoo and The Solutions. Performances will start at 2 p.m.

The district office hopes the concert will boost cultural tourism in the Hongdae area.

“Indie culture, well represented by Hongdae, is linked to our local economy and tourism,” Yoo Dong-kyun, head of the Mapo-gu Office, said in a press statement. “The district will do its best to help indie culture remain a distinct feature of Hongdae rather than a passing fad.”

No prior reservations or ticketing is required to enjoy the festival. Visitors can also entertain themselves at various “indie-themed” booths for making small souvenirs or taking photos.

At the same location on Saturday, a local cooperative of live clubs will host the Zandari Music Street from 1 p.m., including a performance by the well-known band 10cm. Zandari Festival is held the following weekend at venues across the neighborhood. Visit
