A ruling party lawmaker who visited Russia in May as President Moon Jae-in's special envoy has been appointed to lead a newly created presidential committee tasked to discuss economic cooperation with China, Russia and possibly North Korea.
Cheong Wa Dae said Friday Moon has appointed Rep. Song Young-gil of the Democratic Party of Korea as head of the Northern Economic Cooperation Committee.
The presidential committee, which was set up this week, will collaborate with relevant ministries to develop ways of boosting economic ties with Russia and China.
Song, 54, visited Russia as a special presidential envoy shortly after Moon took office on May 10.
The committee will develop relevant policies based on the outcome of the upcoming Korea-Russia Joint Economic Committee and the third Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) slated for early September.
The EEF is scheduled to be held Sept. 6 and 7 in Vladivostok in the Russian Far East. On the sidelines of the gathering, Moon plans to hold a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
