Korean actor Cho Jin-woong has been invited to join the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), famous for the Oscars.
AMPAS has appointed a record 928 new members this year.
To become a member, at least two existing members have to back the nomination and it has to be accepted by the committee, or the person has to have been nominated for an Academy Award. Specific requirements vary among different sectors. For actors, they have to have starred in at least three full-length films.
“It is honorable and thankful to be a member of AMPAS, and I will try hard to let Korean films win hearts worldwide,” said the actor, who can join AMPAS thanks to his many films, including “The Handmaiden” in 2016 and “Assassination” in 2015.
Other Koreans including actor Ha Jung-woo, filmmaker Hong Sang-soo and his fiancee actress Kim Min-hee were also invited to join the academy.
